Creating truly inclusive programs begins with understanding autism through a respectful, strength-based lens. Autism 101: Understanding Autism in Inclusive Programs helps staff move beyond myths, assumptions, and behavior-focused thinking to better understand how children and youth with autism experience communication, sensory input, social interactions, and everyday program environments. 

This foundational training introduces autism as a form of neurodiversity and emphasizes that there is no single way autism “looks.” Participants will explore how sensory processing differences, communication styles, routines, and social experiences may shape participation in group activities, transitions, play, and daily routines. Throughout the session, staff are encouraged to view behavior as communication and focus on adjusting environments—not changing children. 

Using real-life examples and practical reflection activities, participants will learn how strength-based thinking supports inclusion and helps children feel safe, understood, and capable. Staff will also explore how their own assumptions, language, and responses influence the experiences of children with autism in their programs.

Autism-Friendly Environments & Supports helps staff understand how the physical environment, routines, sensory input, and visual supports all influence children’s behavior, regulation, communication, and participation throughout the day. 

In this training, participants explore practical strategies for creating autism-friendly spaces that reduce stress, increase predictability, and promote independence. Through real-world scenarios and guided reflection, staff will examine how common environmental barriers—such as unclear expectations, overwhelming sensory input, unpredictable transitions, and cluttered spaces—can impact children with autism and contribute to frustration or dysregulation. 

Participants will learn how to use visual supports, structured routines, sensory accommodations, and intentional environmental design to create more inclusive and accessible programs. The course emphasizes that behavior is often a response to environmental demands, and that small, thoughtful adjustments can make a significant difference in helping children feel successful. 

This session also reinforces an important mindset shift: inclusion is not about changing the child—it’s about designing environments that work better for everyone. While the strategies in this training are especially supportive for children and youth with autism, participants will discover how these approaches strengthen participation, independence, and regulation for all children in their care.

Building Inclusive Relationships & Partnering with Families focuses on the “roots” of inclusion—building strong, trusting relationships with children and youth while partnering effectively with families. 

In this training, participants explore how relationship-based practices shape behavior, communication, and engagement. Staff will learn how to move beyond compliance-based approaches and instead build trust through connection, empathy, and respectful communication. Through real-world scenarios and guided reflection, participants will examine how adult responses can either strengthen or weaken relationships with children and families. 

The course also emphasizes the importance of family partnerships. Families are essential collaborators in supporting children with autism, and their insight is critical to creating consistency and success across home and program settings. Participants will learn how to communicate with families in strength-based, respectful ways and navigate challenging conversations with professionalism and care. 

This training reinforces a core mindset shift: inclusion is not just about strategies or environments—it is built on relationships. While the focus includes supporting children and youth with autism, the relationship-based practices in this course strengthen inclusion for all children and families.
