Farewell to Our Visionary Leader: Reflecting on the Legacy of Our Departing CEO

Goodbyes are never easy, and this one is bittersweet. Torrie Dunlap, our esteemed Chief Inclusionista for the past decade, is embarking on a new journey after an extraordinary 21-year tenure at KIT. Torrie joined KIT in 2003 after experiencing the magic of KIT support while directing a theater program that included kids with and without disabilities. She channeled the personal andprofessional growth KIT inspired into an incredible career, challenging perceptions of disability and spreading the mission of inclusion far and wide. All the way up to the United Nations!

You may have seen Torrie’s Tedx Talk Isn’t it a pity? The real problem with special needs or heard one of her keynotes, but Torrie’s talents go beyond her ability to command a room through her passion for inclusion. Torrie’s creativity knows no bounds. Ideas flow freely and she can weave them together toward transformative action. Torrie led by example, never hesitating to take on a challenge or steer us in a new direction.

Under Torrie’s leadership, KIT expanded from local to national clients, pioneered a blended learning model of online, in-person, and virtual support, began supporting inclusion in military programs worldwide, served on a Department of Education working group for inclusion in 21st Century Community Learning Centers, and was awarded special consultative status to the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations.

Torrie’s energy and passion for the KIT mission never wavers, and she will take it with her to her new position as the Chief Innovation Officer at AlphaBEST Education. AlphaBEST is one of our premier partners and they have made a deep commitment to inclusion. Torrie will not be far from the KIT team, and we are excited to stay connected through our collaborative efforts to welcome and support all children.

While Torrie will be missed, we remain steadfast in our commitment to tackle some of the big challenges the childcare industry is facing under the leadership of Interim CEO Tammy Bailey (Inclusionista since 2015). Tammy worked alongside Torrie for 9 years and brings her extensive 25-year corporate experience with large organizations like Coca-Cola, Mattel, and Jack in the Box to the role. The executive leadership team also includes Chief Operations Officer Anna Luther (Inclusionista since 2012) and Chief Strategy Officer Alissa Marotto (Inclusionista since 2006). With strong leadership and support from our Board of Directors, our team of Inclusionistas are ready to step up in new ways to support childcare providers in an increasingly complex landscape.
